Calls for Earlier Service on Peterborough to Stamford Bus Route

Residents in several Cambridgeshire villages are urging transport operators to introduce an earlier service on the Peterborough to Stamford bus route. The Route 27 bus, which connects Peterborough with Stamford and serves Wittering, Wansford, Castor and Ailsworth, currently begins its first journey at 07:30 from Monday to Saturday. Campaigners say this timetable leaves many commuters and students unable to reach work or school on time.

Julia Cunnington, one of the residents leading the campaign, said: “People and students are struggling to get to work or King’s School or Peterborough College as the bus arrives in Peterborough too late for them to make it to where they need to be.” Stagecoach East, which operates the service, has been contacted for comment.

The Peterborough to Stamford bus route has a history of community involvement. It was withdrawn in 2019 but reinstated last year after a concerted effort by local campaigners and former Cambridgeshire and Peterborough mayor Nic Johnson. The service’s return was widely welcomed, but many villagers say the reinstated timetable fails to meet everyday needs. Before it was withdrawn, the bus ran earlier in the morning and stopped directly at King’s School, offering a lifeline to families and students across the area.

The situation has been made more difficult by the loss of other regional routes. The R4 bus between Peterborough and Uppingham, once managed by Rutland County Council, was scrapped earlier this year after being judged financially unsustainable. Passengers were advised to use the Callconnect on-demand bus service instead, but residents say this is far from ideal. “Callconnect can only be pre-booked and doesn’t always fit with people’s schedules,” Ms Cunnington said.

For many, the problem goes beyond convenience. Jean Jackson, a Wittering resident, explained how the timing gap affects daily life. “It’s very difficult. If you have an early appointment, there’s absolutely no way to get to Peterborough in time. You either have to book Callconnect or pay for a taxi.”

The Route 27 service currently runs four times a day, but a recent community survey found overwhelming demand for earlier and more frequent journeys. Ms Cunnington said more than 200 people responded, including over 60 students from King’s School and Peterborough College who depend on the route. “There’s clear evidence of demand for an earlier and more frequent service,” she said.

Local politicians have voiced support for the campaign. Peterborough First Group councillor Gavin Elsey praised residents for their determination, saying: “It was fantastic that campaigners managed to get the bus reinstated and to see how well used it has been since. However, the current timetable doesn’t serve the whole community. An earlier service is essential.” He added that while the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority helped bring the route back, further support was needed to make it viable for all users.

Paul Bristow, the current mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, acknowledged the issue and expressed willingness to engage with residents. “I am aware of the campaign and understand that well-timed public transport is vital for our villages and supporting people to get to work, school and appointments. The Combined Authority is looking forward to meeting with the residents’ group to understand their views in more detail.”

For those living along the Peterborough to Stamford bus route, the campaign represents more than just a plea for punctuality. It’s about keeping rural communities connected, ensuring access to education and employment, and protecting the public transport services that make village life sustainable.

Rogue Builder Jailed for £200k Fraud Across Norfolk

A rogue builder who defrauded homeowners across Norfolk out of more than £200,000 has been jailed for four years and four months.

After an investigation and prosecution by Norfolk County Council’s Trading Standards team, James Morgan was sentenced after admitting to ten counts of theft relating to incomplete building and home improvement work carried out between 2021 and 2024.

As well as the custodial sentence, confiscation proceedings have begun to recover compensation for victims and cover the council’s investigation costs.

Morgan has been disqualified as a company director for ten years and made subject to an indefinite criminal behaviour order.

Morgan, who operated as a sole trader, working under the name Prestige Home Improvement (East Anglia) Limited, targeted customers across the county with offers of building, home improvement, and maintenance services.

In many cases, he accepted large advance payments for work that was never started or only partially completed. Victims were located in Dereham, Diss, Great Yarmouth, Wymondham, Long Stratton, Norwich, and Horsford.

One couple in Dereham lost £179,996 for an extension that was never built.

Another Dereham resident paid £12,200 for a conservatory installation that was not completed.

A Diss customer paid £7,250 for conservatory work that never began.

A Great Yarmouth couple lost £500 for home improvements that were not started.

In Wymondham, a resident paid £309 for work that did not begin.

In Long Stratton, a customer lost £5,051 for garden and home improvement work

One Norwich resident paid £87.50 for gutter repairs that were never undertaken.

In two separate cases in late 2022, Morgan completed minor gutter cleaning but then demanded advance payments for further roof and painting work that was not carried out.

In January 2023, a Horsford homeowner paid £7,400 for fascia, gutter, and patio door installation work that was never started.

Investigators described Morgan’s conduct as systematic, exploiting the trust of his clients through false promises, aggressive communication, and persistent demands for further payment.

Among the victims was Long Stratton resident Katy Gould, who said she was pressured for money while dealing with a family tragedy. She had arranged garden work costing £6,500 and had already paid more than £5,000 when her father fell critically ill.

When she returned home nearly a week later, there were no building materials and no work had been started, other than a pile of soil left on her drive. She said that in the weeks that followed, Morgan repeatedly called, sent hundreds of WhatsApp messages, and even sat outside her home in his van, creating an intimidating atmosphere.

Ms Gould, a single parent of a child with complex care needs, said she and her neighbour both had to call the police and that she no longer felt safe in her own home. She had hoped to create a safe outdoor space for her daughter but has still not received her money back or seen the work completed more than three years later.

Norfolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Partnerships, Councillor Margaret Dewsbury, said

“Householders should be able to trust that when they hand over money for work, it will be completed. Builders should provide written details of the planned work and payment schedule and should not ask for substantial deposits upfront.

“We would ask residents to check out reviews and recommendations before employing a tradesperson and our Trusted Trader scheme provides peace of mind that a person carrying out work is reputable and reliable.”

the case demonstrated the importance of vigilance when hiring tradespeople.

The council’s Trading Standards team received multiple complaints about Morgan’s business practices and launched an investigation that revealed consistent patterns of deception and non-delivery across several years.

Officers said Morgan took advantage of homeowners’ trust, often using emotional manipulation and false assurances to secure advance payments. A report presented to the court described his actions as deliberately dishonest and said his conduct constituted a sustained course of theft through false representation.

The custodial sentence marks one of the more significant prosecutions for fraud by Norfolk Trading Standards in recent years and follows an increase in reports of rogue traders targeting vulnerable homeowners. The council said it would continue to use all available legal powers to bring offenders to justice and recover losses on behalf of victims wherever possible.

Campaigners Warn Loss of The Ship Inn Would Harm South Walsham Village Life

Campaigners in South Walsham, Norfolk, are warning that plans to convert The Ship Inn into a residential property could “impact the vitality and prosperity” of their village. The 200-year-old pub, which closed in 2020, is at the centre of a local dispute over its future use.

The Wellington Pub Company, which owns The Ship Inn, has submitted an application to Broadland Council to change the building’s use from a pub to a home. The company’s agent insisted that “all reasonable efforts have been made to retain The Ship as a community facility,” but concluded that there was no realistic prospect of continuing its commercial or community function.

The pub, which features a small bar and a restaurant with seating for just 16, has struggled to remain viable, particularly following the Covid-19 lockdowns. A viability assessment by property valuer John Joseph Keane found that potential buyers were deterred by the building’s size and the challenge of maintaining a full kitchen with limited covers.

However, local campaigners formed the Save the Ship Inn Community Benefit Society Ltd in 2023, aiming to buy the building and reopen it as a pub and community hub. The group hoped to raise £250,000 and match that sum through the government’s Community Ownership Fund to purchase the venue. Unfortunately, the fund was scrapped last year, leaving the group unable to proceed.

The campaigners also argue that the pub’s asking price has been deliberately inflated. “Potential purchasers have undertaken assessments but concluded the price is too high to proceed,” they said. They warned that losing The Ship would further reduce South Walsham’s already limited amenities, undermining community cohesion.

Broadland Council’s planning report recommended approving the change of use, stating that there was “no policy reason” to refuse the application. The report cited the pub’s lack of viability and the absence of alternative commercial or community interest as key factors.

The proposal was scheduled for discussion at the council meeting on Wednesday, highlighting a clash between preserving a valued local institution and practical considerations about its ongoing viability.

From Seamoss to Smash Burgers, Deliveroo 100 is back: the UK and Global Top Trending Orders of 2025 have been revealed…

Deliveroo has now revealed its much-anticipated annual ‘Deliveroo 100 Report’, the ultimate guide to what the UK and the rest of the world are craving.

Each year, the report charts the most popular and fastest-rising delivery trends across nine different countries – producing a Global List, UK Trending Top 10 List, and UK Biggest Climbers List – and some of the results are not what you would expect…

This year, the UK has taken the global crown with London’s Papo’s Bagels claiming number one worldwide, and a further sixteen UK items feature on the global trending list – including 7Bone, Crunch, JENKI, Black Bean Burger, Wingstop, Planet Organic, WIlko and more.

From smash burgers to seamoss, matcha lattes, tacos, smoothies, sourdough, rice bowls, and even electrical fans – the results clearly display that customers both appreciate their feel-good favourites, but are also not afraid to try something new.

Global Trending List results:

  1. UK – The Classic, Papo’s Bagels, London
  2. Italy – Crea la tua Piadina, La Piadineria, Bologna
  3. UAE – The Spicy Club, Rascals Deli, Dubai
  4. France – Lobster Rolls, Homer Lobster, Paris
  5. Ireland – Dash Double Smash, Dash Burger, Dublin
  6. Singapore – Mala Stir-Fried, Zhang Liang Mala Tang, Singapore
  7. Belgium – Classic Cheeseburger, Rambo Saint-Boniface, Brussels
  8. UK – Dirty Meal Deal, 7Bone, Reading
  9. Italy – Smash Brown Menù, Smash Tag, Roma
  10. UAE – The Rebecca Sandwich, Gino’s Deli, Dubai

These results show that Brits are making a big impression on Deliveroo – with the UK being one of only three countries to secure two spots in the top 10 alone.

Since there has been an explosion in popularity of bagels across the country (particularly in London), Papo’s Bagels is a much-loved winner, being crowned the nation’s ultimate comfort food.

Founded by a husband and wife duo during lockdown, this independent, family-run business is based in the capital, and rose to the top of the global ranking with their Classic Bagel – combining smoked salmon, cream cheese, sliced red onion, tomatoes and capers. This is a remarkable achievement for the team, who have beaten restaurant giants and well-known international chains to secure the number one position worldwide.

From starting with home-based deliveries, to operating from a commercial kitchen, to daily queues at their bricks and mortar store in Dalston, to sell-out merch and finally arriving on Deliveroo, this NYC-style bagel business have grown from strength to strength. Their success highlights how authentic, locally-run establishments can capture the appetite and love of a nation for new and trending dishes.

Looking at the full Global List results – which lists the top 100 trending dishes – there are clear trends and insights that can be made:

  • Don’t fix something that isn’t broken: with bagels, burgers, and sandwiches dominating orders – it is clear that the world is telling us that a simple, portable and triple-layered format is loved when it comes to a satisfying delivery.
  • There’s great power in elevating a classic: whilst the world clearly loves burgers and sandwiches, there is also a massive market for turning a delicious classic, into something a bit more… out there.
  • Sharing cultures through food: food has the power to bring different tastes from around the world to one place, and it is clear from the results of the Global List, that there is absolutely the market, and taste for a large variety of culinary exploration.

UK Top 10 Trending Dishes and Items on Deliveroo for 2025 Results:

  1. The Classic, Papo’s Bagels, London
  2. Dirty Meal Deal, 7Bone, Reading
  3. Crunch Ultimate Combo, Crunch, London
  4. Jason’s Sourdough Bread, Morrisons, Manchester
  5. Garlic Parmesan 3 piece tenders, Wingstop, Birmingham
  6. Breakfast Bao, Pablo Eggsgobao, Edinburgh
  7. Matcha Iced Latte, JENKI, London
  8. Chicken Pesto Parm, atis, London
  9. Blueberries, Co-op, London
  10. Diavola (Posh Pepperoni!), Sano Pizza, Glasgow

This true, eclectic mix of dishes and treats – from savoury Breakfast Baos from Pablo Eggsgobao in Edinburgh, to the grocery staple of Blueberries in Co-op, London, displays that Brits are up for anything when it tastes good.

A notable mention, this year, is the soaring trend of matcha…

TikTok has once again proven to influence the nation’s obsession with Matcha taking over not only drinks, but also all social media feeds, baking, and even skincare. It’s surging popularity led to it becoming one of the top ten searched keywords on TikTok globally in 2025, and the hype has been responsible for leaving suppliers facing shortages around the world. On the Deliveroo 100 report, this year it showed up in two of the UK’s top 30 – the viral Matcha Iced Latte from JENKi in London (ranked 7th) and an elegant Matcha Chocolate Cake from Sticks N Sushi in Cambridge (which was ranked 29th).

One of the most random additions to list had to be a fan. With Deliveroo’s expansion into the retail space, customers were getting more than just meals delivered to their doors, when Wilko’s Fans became a hit, flying off the virtual shelves. The trend spiked during the intense UK heatwave this summer, when temperatures hit a high of 35°C and even overtook the likes of Barbados, Jamaica and Mexico on the temperature scale.

It is clear from the UK results, that the nation is overall balanced in their nutritional choices, but are also quite forgetful in their weekly shop – where they use the online site to order random grocery items to be delivered to their door. It is also evident that we are an impressionable population – with many of the items being dishes driven by online buzz. Trendy items like ‘Birria Tacos’ and ‘Pistachio Tiramisu’ sit alongside wellness products like Seamoss Gel and Matcha lattes – illustrating how products that commonly pop-up on the internet, rapidly become mainstream UK delivery orders.

And finally… Onto the UK Biggest Climbers of 2025

As the Deliveroo brand continues to expand its non-food offering, people are turning to the app for quick and convenient shopping solutions – which is why they have revealed the ‘Biggest Climbers’ for the first time this year.

Valentine’s Day week was the busiest time for jewellery – clearly, when it comes to romance, we’re a nation that loves a convenient, last-minute luxury! But beyond gifts, customers turned to Deliveroo for comfort and relief during extreme weather, with sales peaking for fans in the week of July 7th as the UK sweltered under a heatwave.

Staying cool wasn’t the only priority, though, as maintaining that summer glow was also top of mind for many.

The ultimate skincare GOAT this year was facemasks –  overall demand saw a significant spike in June, suggesting customers were stocking up for holiday travel, pre-wedding prep, and all important essential summer facial hydration.

2025 Biggest climbers include:

  • Fans
  • Power bullet
  • Cat Litter
  • Perfume
  • Face Masks
  • Paint Rollers
  • Candles
  • Charging cables
  • Jewellery
  • Suncream

Deliveroo Vice President of Regional Growth, Jeff Wemyss, said:  “Marking our ninth year, the Deliveroo 100 is more than a list – it’s a definitive snapshot of global cravings and consumer habits. This year’s list clearly shows the strong connection between communities and their beloved independent restaurants, which sit proudly alongside our favorite chains.

We’re also seeing an evolution in the way people shop, with non-food orders rapidly growing across the UK. In today’s fast-paced world, convenience is a top priority, and we are committed to being the go-to for getting consumers what they need, exactly when they need it.

Whether you’re ordering a hearty smash burger or perfectly ripe blueberries, Deliveroo has something for every need.”

Residents Debate Renaming Prince Andrew’s Road Amid Public Confusion

Residents of Prince Andrew’s Road in Hellesdon, near Norwich, are raising questions about whether the street’s name should be changed, following renewed public attention on the former Prince Andrew.

Last week, the ex-prince was stripped of his title due to his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Councillor Shelagh Gurney said several residents had contacted her, expressing discomfort at being associated with the former royal. “Changing the name would involve solicitors and a lot of expense for residents, who would have to update their address on all official documents,” she noted.

However, Gurney highlighted a key historical detail that may ease concerns. Research indicates the road was actually named after Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, the grandfather of Prince Philip, who died in 1944—long before the birth of the former Duke of York. “There’s a kind of misconception that this road is named after Prince Andrew… now Mr Mountbatten Windsor,” she said.

Any potential change would require unanimous approval from all 107 households on the street, making the process complicated. Opinions among residents are divided. Stacy Baldry, 41, said she preferred to avoid association with the former prince: “I feel it’s very unfortunate… we wouldn’t want any association with the name. I don’t even want to say the name.”

In contrast, 85-year-old Valerie Attfield expressed indifference, suggesting the cost and effort would outweigh any benefit. “That’s going to cost more money, and it’s not only here: there’s another one at Thorpe,” she said.

Linda Pendergrass, also a resident, said she had no objections. “Honestly, I don’t care. Not in the slightest… Even if I were staying here, I wouldn’t be putting up a fuss about changing the name of the road.” Pendergrass is in the process of moving closer to Sandringham, the King’s private estate, where the former prince will reside.

As the debate continues, residents remain divided between historical clarification and modern sensitivities, with no decision expected in the immediate future.
