Work begins on two new housing schemes in Trowse and Lingwood

Construction has begun on two Repton Property Developments schemes that will deliver new homes in Trowse and Lingwood, transforming former school sites into high‑quality, local housing.

Repton, a company wholly owned by Norfolk County Council, continues to build on its successful programme of turning surplus public land into much‑needed local housing.

Councillor Jane James, cabinet member for corporate services and innovation at Norfolk County Council, said:
“These two schemes clearly demonstrate how Repton is continuing to deliver high‑quality new homes for Norfolk while generating a financial return for the council.

“By bringing forward developments on sites we know well, we are able to combine local insight with the expertise of our partners to ensure these projects work for our communities.”

In Trowse, the former primary school – originally built in 1874 – is being sensitively refurbished to create nine new homes, offering a mix of one, two and three bedroom properties through the full conversion of the historic building.

In Lingwood, Repton is redeveloping the site of the former primary school, which closed in 2014 before being demolished in 2020. The project will deliver 22 new homes.

Each scheme will be built to high, modern standards with air source heat pumps used across both sites. The properties in Trowse are also set to include solar panels and EV chargers.

Both developments are expected to be completed in the first half of 2027.

British Airways launches first Starlink equipped flight

Today marks a significant milestone for the UK as British Airways has taken to the skies with its first aircraft equipped with cutting-edge Starlink Wi-Fi. The historic departure sets a new benchmark for in-flight connectivity ushering in a future where fast, reliable internet access is seamlessly integrated into the passenger experience from takeoff to landing.

The aircraft, a Boeing 787-8, departed for Houston, Texas offering passengers something entirely new; complimentary access to high-speed, reliable internet throughout their journey.

Customers onboard were able to stream content, work remotely, browse the web and stay connected with family and friends all from 35,000 feet.

Starlink’s advanced network, powered by more than 10,000 satellites in low Earth orbit, delivers significantly faster and more consistent connections for multiple devices.

Passengers onboard can expect download speeds of up to 500 Mbps, making it possible to video call, stream high-definition content and shop online all while in the air without interruption.

The system is designed to perform consistently across the entire flight, whether you’re flying over land or the ocean.

British Airways’ Chairman and Chief Executive Sean Doyle described the launch as a “landmark moment.”

“We’re excited to be the first UK airline to bring this level of connectivity to our customers. We know that staying connected matters to people, whether they’re travelling for work or heading off on holiday, and Starlink will give our customers fast, reliable Wi-Fi that transforms the onboard experience. This milestone is part of a wider investment in elevating every aspect of our customer journey as we continue to modernise our airline.”

British Airways has already begun installing Starlink across its 787-8 fleets, with additional aircrafts currently being equipped. The airline has set out an ambitious rollout plan, aiming to install the technology across its entire fleet of more than 300 aircrafts over the next two years.

Once complete, this upgrade will make British Airways one of the first global airlines to offer fast, free Wi-Fi to all passengers, regardless of cabin class.

The move reflects a broader shift in the industry, where seamless connectivity is quickly becoming an essential part of the travel experience rather than a luxury.

As well as improving experiences for customers who can now enjoy being connected to the Wi-Fi throughout their journey, the same high-speed service will now enable a seamless communication between the airline’s Cabin Crew and their colleagues on the ground.

With the new launch of Starlink, it is the key to the airline’s new transformation plan. They will be investing £7 billion across all their areas of the business including new lounge concepts in Dubai and Miami as well as utilising AI and new technologies to increase punctuality.

St Osyth Summer Sounds Festival set for July Return

It’s back! St Osyth Summer Sounds: Music and Food Festival is making its grand return to St Osyth Priory this summer! Join in the fun on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th of July.

Following a successful inaugural year in 2025, the festival has been secured for a further three years in Essex. Admission for the festival will remain free of charge, which has been made possible through support from the National Lottery Community Fund.

Set within one of Essex’s most significant historic estates, the festival will offer a vibrant weekend programme featuring live music, fabulous food, street performances, family activities and large-scale installations.

Ensuring that the festival is free to attend has been a deliberate decision. Arts Trust, a Tendring-based national cultural organisation dedicated to delivering high-quality, accessible experiences, is committed to removing financial barriers and enabling broad community participation.

The event is delivered in partnership with local organisations, volunteers and public services, all working collaboratively to create a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.

Founder & CEO at Arts Trust, Martin Collins says,

“The first year of St Osyth Summer Sounds gave us real encouragement. We saw families spending the day together, young people discovering live performance on their doorstep and communities coming together in a way that felt positive and hopeful.

“By securing the festival for the next three years and removing the financial barrier to entry, we can now build something with real continuity. This is about more than a single weekend. It is about creating opportunities for connection, participation and shared experience that are open to everyone. Being from Tendring ourselves, we are proud to be continuing that work here at St Osyth Priory.”

ScottishPower’s record-breaking apprentice applications show energy industry is the place to be

More people than ever before are looking to kickstart their careers in the energy industry, with ScottishPower receiving a record-breaking number of applications for its 2026 apprenticeship programme.

The green energy company has received more than 6,000 applications for the 150 roles on offer across its businesses – including SP Energy Networks and SP Electricity North West – with opportunities available from Annan to Anglesey, Motherwell to Manchester, and Stirling to Stockport.

The level of interest – a 25% increase on 2025 – reflects the diversity and variety of the apprenticeships available across ScottishPower as it takes forward its £24 billion investment programme to rewire the grid and build more clean power, expanding the workforce from 6,500 to 11,000 by 2030.

Roles include data science, engineering, fitting, jointing, logistics, overhead lines, project management and software engineering.

Sarah McNulty, ScottishPower’s UK People Director, said: “We’ve been blown away by the response to this year’s apprenticeship programme, which confirms what we’ve always known – that the energy industry is the place to be. It’s also testament to the success of the thousands of apprentices who have come before and progressed into long-term careers across our different businesses.

“Our apprenticeship programme has gone from strength to strength in recent years, more than trebling the apprenticeship routes on offer as we build the workforce for a clean energy future. We’ve also extended the opportunities available from the more traditional ‘hard hat, hi vis’ engineering roles to the tech and commercial skills needed today.

“It’s a really exciting time to join the energy industry and our apprenticeship programme is just one way we’re building careers, shaping futures, and creating a legacy that we will all benefit from for years to come. Good luck to all our applicants.”

More than 450 apprentices are currently working across ScottishPower and looking forward to welcoming the new cohort later this year.

Robyn McKenzie (23) from Edinburgh is a recent project management apprenticeship with SP Energy Networks where she worked on everything from operational projects to the company’s £12 billion transmission investment plan. She said: “I’ve had such amazing opportunities throughout my apprenticeship, and the culture of the business has always been supportive and development-focused. This programme has given me exposure, knowledge and strategic insight I’d never have gained in a standard role, so it’s no surprise so many people want to get involved.”

Erin Lovett (22) from Wrexham is a first-year logistics apprentice – and a semi-professional player with Wrexham AFC Women. In her ScottishPower role, she is learning how to manage stores and resources to ensure engineers have the right equipment when needed so they can get to work immediately in the event of a power cut. She said: “This is such a brilliant programme that allows you to earn a good salary while you learn. The people and opportunities really stand out, alongside a strong and supportive network. I can already see that ScottishPower is somewhere to build and make your career and will offer so many chances to go anywhere and do anything. I’m really excited to be here.”

Chloe Winder (27) from Preston is due to complete her two-year cybersecurity technologist apprenticeship in mid-2026. Chloe is part of the cybersecurity engineering team at SP Electricity North West, helping to configure, manage and monitor the deployed security tooling across the network. She said: “My apprenticeship has given me hands‑on skills in a culture that supports growth and learning. It has opened doors to meaningful opportunities, from contributing to live security work to exploring different specialisms, while steadily growing both my technical knowledge and the confidence I need to thrive in cybersecurity.”

New Great Yarmouth Transport Strategy formally adopted

Norfolk County Council and Great Yarmouth Borough Council have formally adopted the new Great Yarmouth Transport Strategy, marking a major step forward in shaping the future of travel, connectivity and infrastructure across the town.

The strategy sets out a refreshed vision for how people will move around Great Yarmouth over the next decade, reflecting changes in national and local transport policy, evolving post Covid travel habits, and the town’s ongoing economic and housing growth. It identifies the transport infrastructure and improvements needed to support sustainable development while protecting Great Yarmouth’s unique culture, heritage and coastal character.

The adoption follows a public consultation carried out in late 2025, during which residents, businesses, community groups and stakeholders shared their views on the proposed direction and priorities. Feedback from the consultation has directly shaped the final version of the strategy now approved by both councils.

Since the previous strategy in 2020, Great Yarmouth has already seen significant transport improvements, including:

• The opening of the Herring Bridge in February 2024, reducing motor traffic on Haven Bridge by 42%
• Upgrades to the railway station access junction
• Enhancements to the A47 Harfreys Roundabout, supporting better traffic flow and the new crossing.

The new strategy builds on this progress and sets out a clear framework for future investment focusing on:

• Improving walking, wheeling and cycling routes
• Enhancing access to public transport
• Supporting planned housing and employment growth
• Reducing emissions and improving air quality
• Strengthening transport links for residents, visitors and local businesses.

The new strategy was ratified by Norfolk County Council’s cabinet on 2 March.

Cllr Graham Plant, Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Infrastructure at Norfolk County Council, said: “With the new Great Yarmouth Transport Strategy now formally adopted, we can move forward with a clear and ambitious plan that supports the town’s future. Transport affects every aspect of daily life, and this strategy provides the foundation for sustainable, long term growth.”

Great Yarmouth Borough Council gave the strategy the final seal of approval today (Tuesday 10 March) at its cabinet meeting.

Councillor Daniel Candon, its portfolio holder for Economic Development and Growth, said: ‘’We have seen major improvements to transport in Great Yarmouth -— including the Herring Bridge and at the bus station — and a new and updated transport strategy for the borough will provide a better framework for future policy.

“Delivering on this strategy will have important benefits for the town, residents, businesses and visitors. It will also address existing issues and provide the best possible conditions to make the town more attractive for further economic investment locally.’’

Cllr Mike Smith-Clare, Norfolk County Council member for Yarmouth Nelson and Southtown, said: “This strategy represents a solid vision, not just of the importance of Great Yarmouth but in the continuing need and commitment to develop and sustain its essential transport infrastructure.”

New bursary scheme launched to support future nurses at the University of Suffolk

A new bursary scheme aimed at widening access to nursing education and strengthening the regional NHS workforce has been launched by the University of Suffolk.

Ten adult nursing students will receive annual bursaries of £3,500 for the duration of their degree through the Transformation Ten Adult Nursing Bursaries, introduced to mark the university’s 10th anniversary in 2026. The funding is designed to help students facing financial barriers pursue a career in nursing while supporting healthcare provision across Suffolk and the wider region.

The scheme has been funded by The ALBORADA Trust, a Suffolk-based charitable foundation that supports initiatives across healthcare, higher education, research and international aid.

The bursaries will be available to applicants from Suffolk, Essex and Norfolk who demonstrate financial need and academic potential. Priority will also be given to students from underrepresented backgrounds, including care leavers, mature learners and those with a declared disability. Eligible applicants must apply through the main UCAS cycle by 30 June 2026 and show academic potential through Level 3 qualifications such as A-levels or BTECs, alongside performance at interview.

The initiative comes amid a national decline in nursing enrolment since the Covid pandemic, with mature student participation dropping by around 30%. The university hopes the bursaries will encourage more people to consider nursing who might otherwise be unable to afford to study.

Professor Jenny Higham, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Suffolk, said:
“This year, as we celebrate 10 years of being an independent university it is important that we recognise the impact the University of Suffolk has made, not only creating opportunities for people of all ages to study, but also delivering projects within the community.

“The generous donation from The ALBORADA Trust and the creation of the Transformation Ten Adult Nursing Bursary represents a significant investment for the University and its students.”

Grant Harris, Director of the ALBORADA Trust, added:
“The ALBORADA Trust is delighted to continue its support of the University of Suffolk’s work in meeting the healthcare needs of the local community and providing opportunities for a fulfilling career in nursing. We look forward to seeing how this transformative project unfolds.”

The trust has been a longstanding supporter of the university. It previously contributed £1.25 million towards the development of the university’s Health and Wellbeing Building, which opened in 2023 and houses state-of-the-art teaching facilities for health courses.

Professor Paula Kersten, Dean of the School of Health, Sciences and Society at the University of Suffolk, said:
“We are grateful to the ALBORADA Trust for their ongoing support and contribution to our health courses. Adult nursing is a hugely rewarding career and we are delighted that this new bursary will provide a significant boost for those students who may otherwise be excluded from studying.”

In 2025, the University of Suffolk was named University of the Year at the Whatuni Student Choice Awards and was runner-up for Teaching Quality and Student Experience in the The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide.

Students interested in studying adult nursing can find more information on the University of Suffolk website.

Work progressing on economy boosting A47 Thickthorn project

Roads and Buses Minister Simon Lightwood has visited National Highways’ £200 million A47 Thickthorn improvement project which will improve connectivity, reduce congestion, and support growth.

The visit, a year on from when funding was announced, celebrates the progress being made on this key junction between the A47 and the A11 near Norwich.

Two new large underpasses directly underneath the A47 and A11 carriageways will provide a new free-flow link road, reducing congestion by removing around 12,000 vehicles from the roundabout each day.

This will mean faster, more reliable journeys, improved access to Norwich Hospital and Norwich Research Park, increased capacity for future traffic growth, and improvements to this important trade route to the eastern ports. The work is crucial for nearby housing developments in Cringleford and Wymondham where more than 3,000 homes are being built.

A new road is also being built with a bridge over the A11 between Cantley Lane South and Norwich Road, and a new footbridge over the A47 to the east of the junction will open up new routes for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.

Minister Lightwood visited the site to see first-hand the scale of the project.

Roads and Buses Minister Simon Lightwood said: “I’m delighted to be here in Norwich today, to mark the start of works on National Highways’ junction upgrade, improving transport connectivity for the whole region.

“These new underpasses will not only mean faster journeys, but also better connecting people and businesses to new jobs, housing and ports. This is crucial for growth in Norwich and East Anglia, and the country as a whole.”

The project that has taken months of preparation, from shifting earth to archaeological and environmental works and moving utilities and drainage, all while minimising disruption by keeping the A47 and A11 open in both directions. Experts will dig down several metres, removing 640,000 tonnes of earth in total to create two new underpasses.

The Thickthorn project is part of more than half a billion pounds of investment in road infrastructure in the region. To the east of Norwich, a dualling project at Blofield is nearing completion and to the west a dualling project at Tuddenham is well underway.

The scheme is also supporting the Greater Norwich City Deal, attracting more businesses to operate in Norwich and is expected to create over 44,000 homes, 33,000 new jobs and 360 additional hectares of new commercial land by 2038. It is part of the Government’s commitment to grow and renew our national infrastructure.

Colin Bird, Director of Enhancements at National Highways, said:

“Motorways and major A roads play a key role in keeping the UK economy moving, carrying a third of all traffic and two thirds of freight. This major project will transform journeys in and out of the region, boosting growth, reducing congestion, and improving safety.

“It’s a feat of engineering as we are creating two new underpasses, two new bridges, a local link road and a new slip road, and undertaking deep excavations, earthworks, and utility diversions – all whilst keeping the roads open for traffic where we can.”

James Corker, Infrastructure Divisional Director at Skanska UK, said:

“Today marks an important milestone for everyone involved in delivering this transformational upgrade at Thickthorn. Our teams are bringing world‑class engineering expertise to a complex programme of works on a live junction, from constructing two major underpasses to creating new bridges and link roads that will improve journeys for thousands of people every day. We’re proud to be working in partnership with National Highways to build infrastructure that supports growth, strengthens regional connections and leaves a lasting positive legacy for the community.”

In addition to improving the A47, several environmental improvements will be made including over 150 boxes for wildlife. Trees and hedgerows will also be planted to replace those removed to facilitate the scheme. Around 800 metres of environmental fencing will be created too, to protect wildlife.

The project will have more than 300 people working on site and will provide a legacy by upskilling local people, therefore boosting future employment prospects. There are 30 subcontractors on site too currently, mostly from the local area who work on everything from electrics to earthworks, with several apprentices and trainees too learning a trade.

Work on the project is phased to keep both the A47 and A11 open while the scheme is built. From December 2025 until October 2026, the A47 eastbound runs with two lanes (one via Thickthorn roundabout to rejoin eastbound without merging), while westbound remains single lane to provide that capacity. As works progress, the contraflow will switch, giving westbound two lanes and eastbound one lane until autumn 2027. This approach creates a fixed, protected work area for the underpasses and structural works while avoiding long full closures.

The project is set for completion by spring 2028.
