National Highways Leads Five-Day Transformation of Felixstowe Community Space

National Highways has led a transformation of a rundown community group’s outdoor space in true TV makeover style – with five days of action.

Felixstowe Opportunity Group runs a centre for children with specialist needs and disabilities – and its outdoor area was not fit for purpose and badly in need of work.

National Highways stepped in and clubbed together with its road surfacing partner Eurovia Surfacing and other businesses as part of its social value initiatives to revitalise the space.

On the site, new turf and pathways have been laid, along with fresh fencing and a safer, more accessible and attractive play and sensory area.

The project was identified through Eurovia Surfacing’s community engagement and social value activity and has been crowned the “National Highways East Big Social Value Project”. Many of the materials were donated and work led by volunteers.

Dean Birch, supplier relationships manager at National Highways, said: “It’s been absolutely brilliant to see the change here at the community centre.

“This project highlights the importance of National Highways and its delivery partners not only delivering work and projects but also making a difference to the communities it works in, from the environment to boosting local causes.

“It is such a wonderful cause, and we hope that the children who access this centre can enjoy the area for many years to come.”

Laura Skeffington, social value coordinator from Eurovia Surfacing said: “This project is about working together to support a community space that makes a real difference to families in Felixstowe. By improving the environment, we’re helping ensure the charity can continue its vital work for many years to come.”

National Highways builds social value into all the work it carries out to make a positive difference to the communities and the environment where it works. It has begun to measure this through a Social Value Plan. Find out more on the National Highways social value web page.

Felixstowe Opportunity Group, run entirely by volunteers, plays a vital role in supporting vulnerable families in the local area. It helps to reduce social isolation, provide a safe and welcoming environment, enable children to socialise and build confidence. The centre is also used by young families and parent groups, local charities, drama clubs, baby groups, bereavement sessions, and community organisations.
