New UK Training Initiative Warns Of Hidden Autoimmune Crisis Impacting Jobs And NHS

A new UK education initiative has been launched amid warnings that autoimmune diseases may represent one of the most significant yet under-recognised drivers of chronic illness, workplace absence and long-term pressure on the National Health Service.
The Autoimmune Support and Awareness Foundation has introduced a CPD-accredited professional training programme titled “Autoimmune Diseases in the Workplace,” designed to address what campaigners describe as a “silent epidemic” affecting millions of people across the country.
Autoimmune conditions are estimated to affect around one in ten individuals, frequently emerging during prime working years.
Across the UK, long-term health conditions account for tens of millions of lost working days annually, contributing to reduced productivity, economic strain and rising workforce inactivity.
Campaigners also warn that clinicians are increasingly observing younger individuals presenting with autoimmune conditions, raising concerns about long-term workforce sustainability, early career disruption and future socioeconomic stability.
These complex diseases can affect multiple organs and systems of the body and often present with invisible but debilitating symptoms such as extreme fatigue, chronic pain, neurological difficulties and significant psychological distress.
Supporters say this can lead to delayed diagnosis, worsening long-term outcomes and increasing mental health challenges for individuals attempting to remain in employment.
Advocates highlight that the wider social consequences can be profound.
Living with poorly understood chronic illness may contribute to reduced confidence, social isolation, experiences of stigma or bullying, depression and other behavioural or psychosocial challenges that can impact families, workplaces and communities.
Campaigners argue that, when considered collectively, autoimmune and immune-mediated inflammatory diseases represent a major contributor to national disease burden and premature mortality — although they are rarely recognised or recorded as a single category within public health discourse.
The new training programme aims to equip healthcare professionals, employers and organisational leaders with practical tools to improve recognition of autoimmune conditions and implement supportive workplace strategies.
Advocates believe that greater awareness could help reduce avoidable sickness absence, improve staff retention and productivity, and contribute to better mental and physical health outcomes across the working population.
They also say that earlier identification of symptoms and appropriate referral pathways may help limit irreversible disease progression, potentially reducing long-term demand on NHS services already facing sustained capacity challenges.
Campaigners describe the wider ambition as strengthening national resilience by ensuring that chronic immune conditions are better understood not only as a medical issue, but as a major societal, economic and public health challenge affecting all sectors of the population.
Asal Shirazi BEM, Founder of the Autoimmune Support and Awareness Foundation, said:
“Autoimmune disease is one of the most overlooked health challenges affecting our society today, and we are increasingly seeing younger people impacted at critical stages of education and career development.
The consequences can extend far beyond physical illness — influencing mental wellbeing, social participation, employment prospects and long-term life opportunities.
Without greater awareness, many individuals may face misunderstanding, stigma or delayed support, which can worsen health outcomes and increase pressure on families, workplaces and public services.
Through education, we can help workplaces respond earlier, reduce avoidable absence, protect productivity and contribute to easing the long-term burden on the NHS.
Ultimately, this is about safeguarding the health, dignity and future potential of our nation.”
Organisations interested in learning more about delivering the CPD training programme are encouraged to contact the foundation.

Poor WiFi Costs UK Small Businesses 11 Hours A Week In Lost Productivity

Businesses lose an average of 11 hours a week to connectivity issues, despite growing access to full fibre

Poor in-premises WiFi is quietly draining productivity from UK small businesses, according to new research from Zen Internet.

Half (49%) of senior business decision makers say WiFi coverage inside their premises limits the value they get from their broadband connection. Yet the same portion (50%) say their business has access to full fibre.

The findings point to a growing disconnect between infrastructure rollout and real-world experience inside business premises.

Connectivity disruption is widespread. On average, businesses experience WiFi disruption 13 times a month. Six per cent face issues every day, while more than six in 10 experience problems at least two to three days a week.

And resulting productivity losses are significant. Businesses estimate they lose an average of 11 hours per week due to WiFi issues, with 42% saying they lose between 11 and 15 hours.

The commercial impact according to senior business executives are reported as:

  • 23% say it disrupts communication with customers or suppliers
  • 22% say it prevents them running cloud-based tools
  • 22% say it directly slows down operations
  • 22% say it leads to lost sales or missed opportunities
  • 21% say it stops them taking digital payments
Nearly four in 10 (39%) say they lose revenue because of poor WiFi, and 44% say they cannot afford to keep experiencing service interruptions.
Confidence is also affected. Almost half (47%) say they would feel more confident in their business success if they could ensure better connectivity. The same proportion say WiFi is as critical to their business as a good shopfront or website.
Jon Nowell, managing director of Zen’s business division, said: “Full fibre rollout is transforming UK connectivity, but speed alone isn’t enough. If WiFi inside the building can’t keep up, businesses won’t see the benefit. Reliable in-premises connectivity is now essential infrastructure for organisations.”
Zen has launched eero Business to address this gap. Eero Business is a WiFi system for small businesses that combines high-performance fibre with intelligent mesh WiFi to deliver reliable, consistent coverage across offices, retail spaces and hospitality venues. It offers eero’s mesh WiFi hardware with business features like guest networks, security and network controls all manged through an app. To learn more: zen.co.uk/business.

Top Gardening And Landscaping Trends Set To Shape UK Gardens In Spring And Summer 2026

Simon Parry is a TrexPro composite deck installer for Trex UK and director of Simon Parry Gardening & Landscaping. Established in 2011, the specialist gardening company offers a range of services: from basic mowing and maintenance to full garden transformations.

Simon is dedicated to maintaining, developing and creating beautiful gardens for homeowners to enjoy. He is also part of the TrexPro installer network for Trex UK. Founded in the US and established in the UK in 2011, Trex invented and perfected composite decking – a sustainable alternative to wood, made of up to 95 per cent recycled materials.

Climate-resistant designs

With the UK experiencing more extreme weather – including longer dry spells and higher temperatures alongside periods of intense rainfall and storms – the need for climate-resilient planting is becoming more important when designing outdoor spaces. When planning designs, we need to consider species that can tolerate extremes without compromising on aesthetics.

Shrubs, perennials and grasses that are drought/heat tolerant include:

  • Rock Rose
  • English Lavender
  • California Lilac
  • Lamb’s Ear
  • Catmint
  • Sea Holly
  • Stonecrop
  • Mexican Feather Grass
  • Blue Fescue

Shrubs, perennials and grasses that are drought/heat tolerant include:

  • Red-Barked Dogwood
  • Guelder Rose
  • Astilbe
  • Hesta
  • Miscanthus Sinensis
  • Bowles’ Golden Sedge

In terms of climate-resistant designs, we’re seeing more layered planting – incorporating structural shrubs as the backbone of the space, grasses for movement and perennial flowers to add seasonal colour.

We also add gravel or mulch when planting to retain moisture, keep roots cool, improve drainage and protect the crowns of plants.

Low-maintenance spaces

Low-maintenance spaces are increasingly in demand, with homeowners looking for attractive gardens that don’t require regular upkeep. Designs for low-maintenance spaces focus on incorporating durable materials along with resilient planting options to reduce the time, cost and effort required to keep gardens looking their best throughout the year.

Composite decking is a popular option for low-maintenance design schemes, offering long-term durability and requiring much less upkeep compared to timber alternatives. Resistant to fading, warping and rotting and requiring no staining or sanding, composite can be cleaned periodically with warm, soapy water.

Bold, architectural plants such as New Zealand Flax, Japanese Maple and certain types of Bamboo (don’t be scared!) and ornamental grasses like Miscanthus add year-round interest while keeping the need for maintenance to a minimum.

Biodiversity

Garden and landscaping designs are increasingly prioritising biodiversity, creating outdoor spaces that support wildlife while still maintaining a sense of structure. Attracting pollinators and using planting schemes that work in harmony with nature encourages a healthier ecosystem, with thoughtful planting and design choices suiting gardens of all sizes.

More homes are introducing wildflower patches, which as well as being aesthetically pleasing are easily maintained are also self-seeding for beautiful flowers year after year.

Other examples of pollinator-friendly plants include Lavender, Ceanothus, Buddleia, Black-Eyed Susans and Verbenas.

Making your garden an extension of your home

Gardens are now seen as an additional ‘room’ in the home, with outdoor living set to continue increasing in popularity throughout 2026. Homeowners are using their gardens to host family and friends, creating spaces that function as additional living rooms, dining areas and outdoor kitchens.

To blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, we’re using colours and styles that complement the homeowner’s inside space, creating a seamless ‘flow’ from inside to out.

To create the freedom for people to use their outdoor area as they please, we incorporate covered seating and decking areas for use in all weathers and rather than use built-in furniture, we opt for seating that can move as and when needed.

Zoned deck designs that shape the landscape

Another trend for this spring and summer is intentional zoning within outdoor spaces. Elevated decks, terraced deck levels and clearly defined zones such as dining, cooking, lounges and garden transitions are increasingly popular for maximising use of sloped or irregular terrain. This trend positions the deck as a functional design feature that shapes the garden and connects garden features (like planting beds and paths) with outdoor living spaces.

Container gardening and soft scaping

Homeowners are increasingly treating decks and patios as garden spaces in their own right. More people are layering greenery directly onto decking areas through container gardening, built-in planters, and vertical plant displays, blending functional outdoor living with lush, plant-rich environments. This trend makes decks feel more inviting and garden-connected while softening hardscape surfaces with colour, texture, and fragrance.

Trex is available from a range of builders’ merchants, garden and landscape supplies specialists across the UK, as well as at over 150 Wickes DIY stores. For more information on Trex, visit uk.trex.com

Joe Whale (The Doodle Boy): Hints & Tips for Kids Who Want to Start Doodling

“When I start a doodle, I always begin with simple shapes. They’re easy to repeat and you can turn them into absolutely anything.” From there, Joe builds characters using a few core principles:

  • Start with simple shapes

Circles, squares, blobs and clouds are the foundation of almost all his characters.
Simple shapes = endless possibilities.

  • Focus on expression

Joe varies the eyes and mouth to create clear emotions – happy, sad, excited, confused.
Keeping expressions simple makes them more powerful.

  • Add fun details

This is where imagination takes over.
Four claws, a party hat, a pet, giant teeth – anything goes.
Joe encourages kids to “go crazy and add whatever makes you smile.”

  • Use bold, confident lines

Strong, contrasting outlines give doodles impact.
Joe advises taking their time so lines stay clean and well‑spaced.

  • Add pops of colour

Blocks of bright colour bring characters to life and highlight fun details.

  • Use your imagination

Don’t be influenced by what others are drawing – create whatever you want in the moment.

  • Turn mistakes into opportunities

Treat mistakes as creative challenges. They help you get better. If something goes wrong, turn it into something new.

UK’s Safest Cities And Towns For Motorists Revealed With York And Telford Leading In England

(BASED ON NEW DATA ANALYSIS)
  • The safest cities and towns in the UK to travel in have been revealed (according to data analysis by motorcycle insurance brand Lexham Insurance)
  • Of the UK’s cities, Northern Ireland’s capital BELFAST came out on top, followed by Scotland’s ABERDEEN in 2nd  and Wales’ SWANSEA 3rd
  • In England, York is the top city based on the data
  • Among UK towns, the safest is TELFORD in Shropshire. That’s followed by IPSWICH in Suffolk and WARRINGTON in Cheshire
  • It also surveyed road-users to uncover what makes them feel UNSAFE – from bad weather to road rage (60% feel afflicted by careless driving)
Of the UK’s cities, Belfast (Northern Ireland), Aberdeen (Scotland) and Swansea (Wales) topped the list. York is the safest city in England based on the findings.
Among towns, Telford in Shropshire, Ipswich in Suffolk and Warrington in Cheshire find themselves parked in the top three respectively.
The top 10 safest CITIES for motorists (based on data analysis)
  1. Belfast
  2. Aberdeen
  3. Swansea
  4. York
  5. Glasgow
  6. Dundee
  7. Liverpool
  8. Sheffield
  9. Norwich
  10. Peterborough
The top 10 safest TOWNS for motorists (based on data analysis)
  1. Telford
  2. Ipswich
  3. Warrington
  4. Poole
  5. Swindon
  6. Watford
  7. Northampton
  8. Middlesbrough
  9. Reading
  10. Luton
Each city and town was scored based on its local crime rate, light pollution levels (given the potential impact on visibility), congestion and number / proximity of police stations to reach a top 50.
It comes after a ‘safety survey’** by Lexham Insurance of 1,000 UK motorists showed how safe they REALLY feel on the roads.
Over three-quarters (79%) of motorists feel ‘safe’ – but some factors jeopardise this.
Car drivers are most unnerved by ‘careless driving or riding by others, e.g. tailgating’ (60%).
For motorbike, moped and scooter riders, it’s jointly ‘bad weather’ (51%) – where conditions such as heavy rain, snow and strong winds can feel more acute without the protection of a car – and ‘uneven road surfaces’ like pot holes (51%).
Potholes are a common road condition concern in the UK. The RAC reported potholes directly caused 25,758 recorded breakdowns in 2024–2025 – an 11% rise on the previous year.
Alisdair Wilson, motoring expert at Lexham Insurance, commented:
“Our research indicates there are clear barriers preventing motorists from fully relaxing into a journey. We can’t control the weather, but simply showing respect to others – especially in traffic, which can feel frustrating – will go a long way towards making UK roads feel safer.”
The findings around rider safety specifically are eye-opening. Of over 500 surveyed, nearly half (47%) said they OFTEN experience ‘verbal harassment or offensive gestures’, while 47% report being ‘cut up’ (e.g. on a roundabout) regularly.
That’s followed by ‘tailgating’ (39%)  and ‘being blocked from filtering’ (37%) –where those on two wheels move past queues of stationary or slow-moving traffic.
Alisdair continued:
“Bikes filtering through the traffic may seem cheeky, but riders are legally entitled to do so. It’s actually safer than stopping behind vehicles, as other motorists are more likely to see them.
Rule 160 of the Highway Code states that drivers must ‘be aware of other road users, especially cycles and motorcycles who may be filtering through the traffic’.
“If you’re unsure of any further obligations as a driver on the road, refresh yourself with the Highway Code. Motorcyclists should also be aware of proposed motorcycle license changes in 2026.”
“Riders face unique vulnerabilities. We’re small and easily missed – in fact, we use the phrase ‘SMIDSY’ (‘Sorry Mate I Didn’t See You’) as we hear it so often by other motorists. Built-up areas bring additional concerns like theft risk and, in congestion especially, road rage from others – I feel this far more acutely on my motorbike than in the car.
“I urge two-wheeler motorists to consider their surroundings, both in terms of their own actions and those of the road users around them, to keep themselves as safe as possible”.
Lexham Insurance’s Rider Safety Index has the full list of the UK’s safest cities and towns, based on its data analysis and survey with motorists.

New Research Highlights Demand For Quieter Homes During Neurodiversity Celebration Week

Continuous beeps, alerts and end-of-programme jingles from your household appliances don’t just irritate – they can overwhelm. For millions, these high-pitched sounds can trigger genuine stress, fatigue or sensory overload as our human brains often perceive these demanding sounds as too much to process on top of all the other stresses of daily life.

Our 2026 National Noise YouGov surveys highlight just how widespread this issue is: over half (54%) of UK parents report that someone in their household experiences sound sensitivity, with a quarter (25%) specifically naming a child. Noise sensitivity is particularly pronounced among neurodiverse individuals, with 87% of autistic people saying they’re affected by sound¹, rating it as more important than thermal, visual or indoor air quality considerations.

Globally, the numbers are even more staggering. At least 1 in 5 people have atypical hearing², and 1 in 6 have measurable hearing difficulties³. That adds up to over 1 billion people worldwide – including 10 million in the UK alone – who may be affected by unnecessary household noise. It’s no surprise, then, that 74% of our survey respondents said they would actively choose appliances with a “mute” setting over similar products without one.

As awareness of neurodiversity and sound sensitivity continues to grow, we have created the first in a new insight series equipping households with the practical solutions needed to reduce sensory stress and create quieter living environments.

Our technical and acoustic teams have examined thousands of product manuals, performance databases and manufacturer specifications to pinpoint appliances with effective mute or silencing options. These findings have been compiled into the Quiet Mark Mute Button Models Guide below, which gives you the insights you need to hit mute and reclaim the calm.
