Surgeons at Broomfield Hospital have had the opportunity to test cutting-edge technology that could support patients needing cancer treatment, reconstructive surgery, nerve repair and lymphoedema care.
The St Andrew’s Centre for Plastic Surgery and Burns at the hospital has an international reputation for delivering world-class specialist surgery, and now staff have been invited to try out a £1.4million state-of-the-art robot to see if it could make a difference for patients.
Laura Puscas, Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Innovation is a huge priority for our Trust, helping to improve outcomes through the latest advances in healthcare. It was fascinating to test out the Symani robot and see just what benefits it could realise.”
The system is designed specifically for microsurgery and supermicrosurgery, allowing surgeons to operate on blood vessels, nerves and lymphatic vessels that are often less than a millimetre wide.
This gives surgeons greater precision when carrying out some of the most delicate procedures in medicine.
