A supported internship delivered by the Better team at John Bunyan Sports & Fitness has helped local 20-year-old Sophie Plummer secure a part-time role at the centre.
The internship was delivered through the Bedford Borough Supported Internship Programme at the leisure centre, which is operated by GLL, the charitable social enterprise behind Better. The programme helps 16 to 24-year-olds with special educational needs gain workplace experience, build confidence and employment skills through on-the-job learning.
Sophie, who has a keen interest in sport and working with children, completed her 10-week placement at John Bunyan Sports & Fitness earlier this year. She gained valuable experience across a variety of areas within the centre, including the soft play facilities, studios and sports hall.
Throughout the placement, Sophie was supported by centre staff, teachers and job coaches, with reasonable adjustments put in place to help her develop both personally and professionally. Following the success of the internship, she has now been offered a part-time position at the centre.
The Bedford Borough Supported Internship Programme brings together organisations from across different sectors to create meaningful career pathways for young people in the borough. Its wider ambition is to help build a more inclusive workforce where talent is recognised and opportunities are accessible to all.

Aaron Colbert, GLL Community Sports Manager for the Bedford Partnership, said: “Sophie showed enthusiasm from the start, and her confidence grew throughout the placement. She has become a valued member of the team, and we are very pleased to continue supporting her development.”
Sophie said: “My experience has been truly amazing. I was nervous at first, but my confidence grew week by week. I feel incredibly proud to have been offered a job and I’m excited to keep learning and developing my skills.”
