A 1993 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6 (964) with 15,898 warranted miles and a 1999 Ferrari 550 Maranello with just 5,012 miles lead a group of low-mileage, well-documented 1990s poster cars in ‘Poster Cars’, the fourth Collector’s Edition from Car & Classic, which closes on Saturday 3 October. The Porsche 911 Turbo is the most-bid lot in the sale, a clear sign of how highly collectors now value the combination of low mileage and documented provenance.
Supplied new on 29 June 1993 by AFN Chiswick, the official Porsche Centre, the 964 Turbo is finished in Metallic Black over a Cashmere Beige full-leather interior. Its file includes records from its pre-delivery inspection in 1993 and regular specialist maintenance since 2005, with work carried out by AFN Chiswick, JZM Porsche and Autofarm among others, most recently in September 2025. It has covered fewer than 500 miles in the last decade.
The Turbo 3.6 was the last 911 Turbo with a single turbocharger and rear-wheel drive before the 993 Turbo moved to twin turbos and all-wheel drive, and right-hand-drive examples are rare. The model’s pop-culture status was sealed by the 1995 film Bad Boys, and this car wears the registration BAD 1N, which is retained by the seller and available to the successful bidder by separate negotiation.
The right-hand-drive Ferrari 550 Maranello has covered its 5,012 miles since new, an average of fewer than 200 miles a year. The 550 returned Ferrari’s two-seat V12 flagship to a front engine for the first time since the Daytona, replacing the mid-engined F512 M, and its pairing of V12 power with a gated six-speed manual gearbox has made it one of the most sought-after modern Ferraris.
The same qualities run through the sale’s other modern classics. A 1997 Porsche 911 Carrera 2S (993), from the last generation of air-cooled 911, has covered only 8,900 miles; a 2009 911 GT3 RS (997) shows just 11,664km; and a 2000 BMW Z8, the roadster that became a screen icon in the 1999 James Bond film The World Is Not Enough, has covered 17,700 miles.
Provenance tells the story elsewhere. The ex-Petter Solberg Subaru Impreza S9 WRC and ex-Tommi Mäkinen Mitsubishi Lancer WRC carry the documented competition history of two World Rally Champions, while a BMW E30 M3 once owned by Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay and a 1970 Ford Escort Mexico that began life as a press demonstrator each bring a history that sets them apart from other examples of their model.
Commenting on the sale, Tom Wood, CEO of Car & Classic, said: “Collectors today are buying the story as much as the car. A ‘poster car’ with a well documented history, from the dealer that supplied it to the specialists who have cared for it since, and with so few miles on the clock, is exactly what the market is rewarding, and the response to the 964 Turbo in this sale reflects that. For buyers, it is a chance to own the car they grew up wanting, in the condition they always imagined it.
“Our scale, data and digital marketing put each car in front of the enthusiasts and collectors most likely to appreciate it, wherever they are in the world. That reach is one of the defining strengths of an online auction, and we cannot wait to discover where these cars go next.”
‘Poster Cars’ is the fourth instalment in Car & Classic’s Collector’s Edition series of carefully curated, story-led online auctions. Its predecessor, ‘For the Love of Porsche’, concluded in August with more than £1.7 million in winning bids and five six-figure results.
