Mazda CX-80 Named Diesel and EcoCar Magazine’s 2026 Car of the Year

  • The Mazda CX-80 e-Skyactiv D has come out on top of the 2026 Diesel Car Magazine Diesel Top 40.
  • It was named Best Diesel Seven-Seat SUV and overall Car of the Year for a second year in a row.
  • Powered by the same engine, the Mazda CX-60 finished in 6th place and was named Best Large SUV.

The Mazda CX-80 has been named 2026 Car of the Year by Diesel and EcoCar Magazine – topping their 2026 Diesel Top 40 ranking for the second year in a row. In addition, the Mazda CX-60 ranked sixth and was named Best Large Diesel SUV – for the fourth consecutive year. Both cars share the same advanced in-line six-cylinder 254ps 3.3-litre e-Skyactiv D diesel engine matched to all-wheel drive.

Featuring a highly innovative, advanced combustion technology: Distribution-Controlled Partially Premixed Compression Ignition (DCPCI) – the award-winning e-Skyactiv D engine delivers high engine efficiency, low emissions and frugal fuel economy, ensuring the CX-80 and CX-60 have class leading environmental credentials.

The e-Skyactiv D powertrain also features M Hybrid Boost – Mazda’s 48V Mild Hybrid System, which enables high output combined with excellent fuel economy. Combining the two technologies of hybrid and DCPCI advanced combustion contributes significantly to the CX-80 and CX-60’s outstanding driving range, great driving feel, low fuel consumption and class leading emissions. With 254ps at 3,750rpm and maximum torque of 550Nm at 1,500-2,400 rpm, performance and towing ability is key to the Car of the Year CX-80’s appeal.

Commenting on the Mazda CX-80’s Car of the Year title, Diesel and EcoCar Magazine Editor, Ian Robertson, said: “for the second-year running, Mazda has been awarded Car of the Year 2026 for the sensational CX-80. Despite a flurry of new products during 2026, none have surpassed the high standards set by the Japanese firm’s three-row SUV. The CX-80 claims the ultimate prize and is a masterclass in effortless authority. The smooth six-cylinder 3.3-litre diesel engine is aided by 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance delivering a muscularity that never feels strained, while still retaining close to 50mpg on a run. Standard four-wheel drive brings reassurance whatever the weather, and the CX-80 rides with a suppleness few rivals in the three-row class can match”.

Adding, “inside Mazda’s obsessive attention to detail shows in the use of beautiful materials, damped switchgear and intuitive controls. All three rows offer adult space and boot swallows family luggage with ease. It’s a car that makes you want to find an excuse for a long journey and is a thoroughly deserving winner for a second year in succession”.

Coming in sixth place in the Diesel Top 40 ranking and taking the Large SUV of the Year accolade, the Mazda CX-60 also starred in this year’s awards. “Mazda’s push into the premium sector continues with the CX-60, which impressed us all over again this year, winning for the fourth year in a row”, said, Ian Robertson.
